Dr. Martin Mencke is the pastor of our congregation since August of 2004:

"Like others before us, we arrived in Washington, a place very different from our home in Germany, to begin a new phase in our lives in an exciting place. We were quickly made to feel welcome by the congregation, by neighbors at our home in Arlington, at the German school and in my capacity as pastor of the German Lutheran Church."

Before taking this appointment as pastor in Washington, we lived in Hünstetten, a small town in the German State of Hessen. There, I served for five years as the pastor of the Protestant Church in Hessen and Nassau in the congregation of Strinz-Trinitatis, Limbach/Wallbach. During this time, a central part of my work that I enjoyed very much involved building up a social program for children and adolescents, and congregational work revolving around the theme "Church and Life in the 21st Century". At the same time I became involved in the work of the deanery, the deacon ward and the training and instruction of lay preachers and lectors.

A special passion that I have had since the commencement of my theological studies in Tubingen is "Systematic Theology". For this reason, after studies in Heidelberg and Berlin, I returned to Tubingen to study in this area with Professor Jungel writing my doctoral thesis on "Experience and Certainty of Faith" - an interpretation of the work of Martin Kahler (1835-1912). Pastoral work in Bingen/Rhein and in Berkeley, CA brought this phase in my life to a close.
